Jesus people can get tired, so...

February 5, 2018

Last night’s Superbowl halftime gave us a glimpse of Timberlake encouraging a young fan to take a selfie of the two of them while Timberlake continued singing. i'm fairly apathetic about Timberlake, but for that young fan, that moment is unforgettable. If a selfie can do that, imagine if…

In Mark 6, after Jesus sent out His disciples, they could not get away from the crowds of people everywhere they went. These were not people who wanted an autograph or selfie—they wanted to be healed, to hear truth that gave them purpose in life, and many of them walked for hours or days, many of them carrying their sick. Jesus and His guys were so swamped they didn’t even have time to eat, and when trying to retreat for just a while, found that they could not. So they compassionately gave their full attention to each person despite how tired they must have been.

One truth presented here in this story applies to me as much as anybody. Our world is in desperate need of genuine Jesus people who will give the same kind of attention to others, and it needs more than 13 of them. Our communities, our nation (even many churches), are sorely lacking the kind of compassion and attentiveness we see of Jesus and His guys in Mark 6. The more of us who can follow Christ in this way, the less exhausting it is on those few who truly love their neighbors more than themselves. Let’s follow Jesus in this way today and join those who are already doing it.
